SMC Alliance response to the World Malaria Report 2022
Today, the World Health Organisation published the annual World Malaria Report 2022. The report outlines the status of efforts to fight the disease across four themes: response, resilience, risks and research.
The report underlines the progress made in the expansion of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in 2021. A record 45 million children were reached with seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) throughout the year, including in Uganda and Mozambique where the intervention was trialed for the first time.
The SMC Alliance welcomes the report that shows that, despite disruptions caused by COVID-19, rising biological, climactic and security threats; and a decline in the effectiveness of core malaria tools; national malaria programmes and partners largely ‘held the line’ against further setbacks to malaria control in 2021.
